Senior Database Engineer

A fast-growing, venture-backed technology company is looking for a Senior Database Engineer to join its R&D team and take full ownership of the database layer powering a large-scale, data-intensive platform.

This is a unique opportunity to become the company’s first and only in-house Database Engineer/DBA, taking full ownership of the database layer and shaping the practices, architecture, and processes that will support the company’s continued growth.

In this role, you will design, optimize, and evolve high-performance database systems handling large volumes of real-time data and transactions. You will work closely with software engineers, product teams, and other stakeholders to define data strategies, identify bottlenecks, improve scalability, and proactively prevent future challenges.

This is a hands-on role with significant technical ownership and the opportunity to influence architecture, engineering practices, monitoring processes, and the overall data infrastructure roadmap.

What You'll Do:

• Take full ownership of the company’s database infrastructure and establish database engineering best practices

• Design, build, and optimize scalable database architectures, schemas, and data access patterns

• Analyze and improve database performance through query optimization, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and continuous tuning

• Manage and optimize Azure SQL Database environments handling large-scale data and high transaction volumes

• Identify performance bottlenecks and proactively drive improvements before they impact production

• Design and implement processes for monitoring, alerting, availability, reliability, backup, retention, and security

• Lead database integrations and support development teams with efficient data solutions

• Build and maintain database CI/CD processes, schema migrations, and deployment workflows

• Work with SQL and NoSQL technologies, including Elasticsearch/OpenSearch

• Develop automation tools and scripts using Python and/or PowerShell

• Partner with engineering and product teams to enable analytics capabilities and maximize the value of company data

Job Requirements:

• 7+ years of hands-on experience in Database Engineering, Database Development, or DBA roles

• Strong experience with SQL Server / Azure SQL Database

• Excellent T-SQL skills, including complex query development and optimization

• Deep understanding of database performance tuning, indexing strategies, and troubleshooting

• Proven experience working with large-scale databases, high volumes of data, and transactional systems

• Experience designing database solutions for scalability and reliability

• Hands-on experience with cloud database environments, preferably Azure

• Experience with database monitoring, performance analysis, and proactive optimization

• Experience with NoSQL/search technologies such as Elasticsearch or OpenSearch

• Experience with database CI/CD processes and schema versioning

• Ability to automate processes using Python and/or PowerShell

• Strong ownership mindset, independence, and proactive approach
