Head of News Desk

We are looking for a Head of News and Politics Desk to lead the news operation of Under the Radar and an additional news brand, with editorial responsibility for ongoing coverage, breaking-news updates, explainers, interviews, and political content for young audiences.

The role requires a combination of deep understanding of the news and political agenda, together with the ability to translate complex issues into fast, accessible, responsible social-first content. This position is for someone who can make decisions under pressure, manage a team and shifts, maintain accuracy and fact-checking standards, and at the same time identify stories, angles, and formats that can grow audiences and make news truly relevant to young people.

Responsibilities Oversee ongoing news coverage, including editing and approving breaking-news updates, explainers, articles, and interviews.

Manage the editorial agenda, prioritize stories, and allocate work across the desk.

Grow audiences and lead the brands toward strong growth.

Manage the team, including shift planning and weekend coverage.

Maintain accuracy, fact-checking, source verification, and editorial standards.

Adapt coverage to the language, tone, and audience of each brand.

Develop new formats, coverage plans, and original news content.

Analyze data and competitors to improve coverage, distribution, and growth.

Requirements Experience in news/content editing or desk management.

Strong command of the news and political agenda.

Strong understanding of social media and how young audiences consume news.

Sound editorial judgment and the ability to make decisions under pressure.

Excellent writing, editing, and ability to make complex issues accessible.
