The Field Applications Engineer is responsible for providing technical support to customers’ PCB designers and manufacturing groups. This position will interface with customers’ PCB designers and PCB technologists early in the design cycle and provide feedback on routing and layout techniques, signal integrity performance, cost trade-off analysis of PCB layer stack-up, material selection processes, and other electrical and mechanical requirements based on an understanding of the customer’s end-product application.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Establish technical contacts between customers and the Company to drive improved technical communication and deeper customer relationships.
• Assist the Company’s pre-production teams through the DFM/TQ process in resolving “on hold” issues at customer sites in a timely manner.
• Review and analyze customer designs for manufacturability, controlled impedance, and specification improvements, while ensuring alignment with the Company’s manufacturing capabilities.
• Update customer designers and manufacturing groups on the Company’s capabilities, and establish technology roadmaps and directions through formal customer presentations.
• Facilitate customer technical requirements with internal engineering and operations teams.
• This position will interface regularly with Sales, Development, Pre-Production Engineering, and Operations teams. The ability to effectively coordinate and balance communication among these functions is essential.
• Educate customer designers and technologists on Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Value (DFV).
• Reduce customers’ design cycle time by facilitating and resolving issues between pre-production engineering teams and customers.
• Improve the quality and completeness of design packages received from customers by identifying design issues related to manufacturability and reliability testing.
• Provide manufacturing facilities with insights into future customer roadmap needs and technology requirements. Identify and communicate roadmap and capability gaps, and facilitate customer technical requirements with engineering and operations.
• Travel to customer sites to support technical issues and key programs as required.
• Assist Sales Account Managers in increasing customer revenue through strong technical support and customer technical service.
• Create and deliver technical capability presentations to customers.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the Company’s PCB manufacturing capabilities and technologies to support QTA/NPI/High Volume Manufacturing across North America and Asia Pacific sites.
Essential Skills and Knowledge:
• Strong printed circuit engineering background and knowledge of the entire PCB manufacturing process, including process flows, individual processing steps, and tooling.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with customers’ design groups.
• Ability to make decisions influencing the quality of PCB designs from strategic customers, enabling high-yield products from manufacturing sites in North America and Asia Pacific while transitioning from QTA/NPI to HVM.
• Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
• Ability to make routine decisions with general direction from the department Manager.
• Effective public speaking and presentation skills.
• Disciplined and effective when working remotely.
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
• 5–7+ years of experience in engineering activities related to PCB manufacturing preferred.
• Minimum experience with electrical design performance and signal integrity, including impedance and insertion loss.
• Intermediate-level skills in drawing/blueprint interpretation, PCB CAM software, and PCB stack-up/tooling software.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Project.
• Willingness to travel approximately 15–25% for customer visits and visits to the Company’s manufacturing sites in North America and Asia Pacific.
Export Control Requirements:
• Must comply with the Company’s Export Control Policies and Procedures and all applicable laws, including ITAR, EAR, and OFAC.
• Must be able to identify ITAR-controlled products on the manufacturing floor and understand that access to such products and related technical data is restricted to authorized personnel.
• Must recognize Foreign Person visitors through badge differentiation.
• Understand and follow authorization procedures for bringing foreign visitors into facilities.
• Understand export control and ITAR requirements for shipments leaving the US.
• Manage vendor approvals for ITAR-related manufacturing and services.
