Head of Optics

Q-Factor, an early-stage startup, is building a full-stack quantum computer based on neutral atoms. Neutral atoms have recently emerged as a leading modality in the rapidly advancing field of quantum computing. Our experienced team, with decades of combined experience, is using state-of-the-art technology and a novel approach to realize a fully functional quantum processing unit with unmatched performance. We are looking for exceptional people to join our growing team of physicists, engineers, and algorithm developers.

A neutral-atom quantum computer is essentially an electro-optical system. Everything - from trapping and initializing to spatial rearrangement, operation, measurement, and real-time feedback - is done with light.

This creates an unusually rich frontier for optical engineering: integrated photonics, ultrafast switching while preserving coherence, real-time spatial control of tens to hundreds of optical beams, acousto-optics, high-power handling, and the development of future photonic integrated circuits. Many of the optical challenges we face sit at the state of the art, and solving them is central to scaling the quantum processor.

As Head of Optics at Q-Factor, you will lead the design, development, and integration of the electro-optical architecture in our quantum processing unit, while working closely with our physics and engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the optics team, in charge of the team’s work plan design, monitoring, and implementation

• Lead the design, build, and integration of the company’s optical stack

• Lead the optical design and build of key optical components

• Responsibility for laser sources, stabilization, and distribution

• Take part in full system design.

Qualifications

• An advanced degree in physics or optical engineering

• At least 7 years of experience with electro-optical R&D

• At least 3 years of experience in leadership positions

• Familiarity with laser systems

• Familiarity with advanced free-space optics

• Ability to collaborate effectively across technical domains and multidisciplinary teams

• Independent, curious, and highly motivated
