RealSense delivers industry-leading depth cameras and vision technology used in autonomous mobile robots, humanoids, access control, industrial automation, healthcare and more. With a mission to deliver world class perception systems for Physical AI and safely integrate robotics and AI into everyday life, RealSense provides intelligent, secure and reliable vision systems that help machines navigate and interact with the human world.
The Role
We're looking for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical domain across our R&D projects. In this role you'll lead both the industrial design and the mechanical design of our depth-camera and Face Authentication biometric products ,from the look and feel of the enclosure to the precision opto-mechanical structures that keep the optics aligned. You'll be the mechanical anchor on multidisciplinary project teams, driving concepts from the first sketch through detailed design, simulation, prototyping, and validation. Alongside product design, you'll design the optical testers and automated test equipment (ATE) that qualify our modules, and you'll run the system, thermal, and opto-mechanical simulations that prove a design will perform before it's ever built. It's a hands-on, end-to-end role for an engineer who wants to own the full mechanical story of a product.
What You'll Do
• Own the mechanical domain across R&D projects, leading mechanical design decisions from concept to production hand-off.
• Drive the industrial design of products form ergonomics , aesthetics, and manufacturability in partnership with product and design stakeholders.
• Design precision opto-mechanical assemblies that hold and align optical elements, sensors, and illuminators to tight tolerances.
• Perform system, thermal, and opto-mechanical simulations (structural, thermal, and optical-alignment/stability) to validate designs and guide trade-offs.
• Develop enclosures, brackets, mounts, and mechanisms with attention to tolerance stack-up, thermal management, and long-term optical stability.
• Take designs through prototyping, build, and validation, iterating quickly on lab hardware.
• Work with machine shops and suppliers on fabrication, tooling, and first-article inspection.
• Collaborate with Architect, optical, electrical, Reliability, and System engineers to integrate the mechanical design into a complete, working system.
• Design optical testers and automated test equipment (ATE) for characterizing and qualifying depth-camera modules.
What You'll Bring
• B.Sc. in Optics, Opto-Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering field.
• Min. of 5 years' experience in mechanical and/or opto-mechanical design of products or precision equipment.
• Knowledge of camera modules, imaging systems, or optical alignment and fixturing.
• Experience owning the mechanical domain of a project end to end from industrial/concept design through detailed design and validation.
• Strong grasp of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Hands-on CAD experience (SolidWorks or equivalent).
• Experience running engineering simulations including structural, thermal, and/or opto-mechanical (FEA and related tools).
• Experience leading multidisciplinary design and integration and combining internal work with subcontractors.
• Practical, hands-on approach so being comfortable in the lab debugging hardware and Mechanics.
• Fluent English; strong communication across multidisciplinary teams.
Nice to Have
• M.Sc in Mechanics, Optics, Opto-mechanics, MEMS and similar fields.
• Experience in industrial design and a strong sense for product form, ergonomics, and aesthetics.
• Experience designing optical testers or automated test equipment (ATE).
• Familiarity with opto-mechanical stability, athermalization, and optical-mount design.
• Experience with precision motion (stages, actuators), pneumatics, and robotic arms.
• Thermal design and thermal-simulation experience.
• Experience integrating mechanical designs with electrical, optical, and software systems.
